Not only did Thursday’s loss snap the Lakers’ four-game winning streak, but Luka Doncic suffered a left hamstring strain in the second half and the game was already out of reach. Lakers coach JJ Redick said after the game that Doncic will undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the severity of the injury.
An already bad night for Doncic got even worse early in the third quarter when he was dribbling in the lane and started rising for a mid-range jumper.
But as soon as he came off the floor, Doncic came down, grabbed his left hamstring and quickly fell to the floor.
Doncic was clearly upset as he left the floor.
The Thunder quickly controlled the game, taking a double-digit lead less than four minutes into the game. The lead never dropped below nine the rest of the way and never dropped below 23 after the first quarter.
Oklahoma City led 82–51 at halftime.
It was the third time this season the Thunder (61-16) led by 30 or more points at halftime.
Two of those have come against the Lakers (50-27). On November 12, the Thunder led Los Angeles 70–38 at halftime in Oklahoma City.
Dortch and Williams made a quick impact on both ends.
Williams hit a pull-up jumper on Oklahoma City’s second possession and then immediately picked up a steal and fed Dort for a 3-pointer.
Dort then had a steal and a quick dunk on the next possession.
Dort hit all five of his first three shots for 14 points in the first quarter – four of them 3-pointers. He also had a pair of steals.
He played a big role in slowing down Doncic, who had scored 40 or more — points in his last three games and five of his last seven.
Doncic missed his first four field goals and finished with only 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting. This was tied for their second lowest scoring game of the season.
Shortly after Doncic’s injury, the Thunder got a scare when Dort fell to the floor after his legs went out from under him as he approached the basket.
Dort immediately got up but went to the locker room before the game restarted and did not return.
Williams finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Isaiah Joe scored 20-17 in the second half.
Oklahoma City’s 139 points were the most surrendered by the Lakers this season and the 43-point loss was Los Angeles’ worst since a 44-point loss to Philadelphia in November 2023.
Austin Reaves led the Lakers with 15 points.
