Rozonda Thomas, known on stage as Chili, recalls her famous 1996 Grammy speech.
For those unaware, the 55-year-old American singer and dancer took home two awards at the 1996 Grammy Awards in the categories of Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best R&B Album.
He gave a memorable speech after winning the award, saying that his salary still does not reflect the huge success he has achieved after giving years to the music industry.
He talks at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on March 26, 2026 People magazine, considering his viral speech clip.
Expressing his thoughts, Chilli said, “Oh, yeah. You know what’s funny about it? My son sent it to me. He said, ‘Mom, I’ve never seen it.’ And it’s a lot of fun. Yeah, but that was a real thing.
He quipped, “We weren’t stopped. But I’m sure the label wasn’t happy that we said that, but it was true.”
“Hilarious. Yeah, it was true,” T-Boz, who also joined her at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, supported.

“We hope our story will be helpful to a lot of other artists. And obviously, we’ve learned a lot and we certainly have a lot more control over our business. So, we don’t play those games,” Chiles said.
