TL;DR
- Google is experimenting with wallpaper-based themes in Gemini, which is part of Google Apps.
- The Google app on Android and Play Store still uses the default colors, white and blue.
- More specifically, changes have started appearing in Gemini’s floating overlay, while other elements still use the default colors.
Google introduced its wallpaper-based theme engine in 2021 and eventually popularized it as Material You. Since its rollout, most of Google’s apps have adopted it. And while Material U has already been succeeded by the new Material 3 expressive design philosophy, a few exceptions, such as the Play Store and parts of Google Apps, still remain and use the traditional white and blue color scheme.
But Google is now on its way to bringing these remaining apps up to par with other apps, and it appears to be starting with Gemini.
We’ve learned that Google is now using Gemini color-coding on your wallpapers, just like other system apps. Gemini is not an independent app, but part of Google Apps on Android. So, we’re seeing these changes in Gemini while testing them with the latest version of the Google app (17.12.51). Although the theme for Gemini is not live yet, we have force-enabled it.
More specifically, we’ve seen it tested on the floating Gemini overlay, which is visible when you apply it directly from the homescreen or over other apps. When Gemini is called up, we can see a slightly tinted floating bar as well as a darker button for Gemini Live.

When the system theme is changed from sand to green, the color also changes, confirming that the Gemini overlay follows the system theme. Apart from color support, we’re not seeing any significant changes to the shape of buttons or other elements in line with Material 3 Expressive, although we expect that to happen eventually.
Notably, while we can activate theme support for the Gemini overlay, the main Gemini app still shows its existing colors. This indicates that the feature may be far from being widely implemented, and this may only be the beginning of change. However, there is an equal possibility that we are wrong about this.
