secret identity
“When the teachers of the law, the Pharisees, saw Him eating with ‘sinners’ and tax collectors, they asked His disciples: ‘Why does He eat with tax collectors and “sinners”?’ Hearing this, Jesus said to them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a physician, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” -Mark 2:16-18
I like superhero movies. An ordinary man or woman has an extraordinary gift, and then has to hide it in order to fit into the world! Sounds like being a Christian, doesn’t it?
Although we are called to “let our light shine,” sometimes we need a “secret identity” to reach those who may for whatever reason turn away from the clear message of the gospel.
There is a pastor in Singapore who, after being in ministry for several years, realized he was called to the arts. “Oh my God, are you real?” he asked, quite surprised by his awkward position. Most pastors will not risk following something that might be considered inappropriate for a spiritual leader.
But still, he felt the encouragement of the Holy Spirit. He and his daughter decided to start practicing magic shows for friends and family, but on a larger scale. Soon, he got the opportunity to perform in auditoriums. And shortly after, he sold out the largest venue in Downtown Singapore for his magic show, “The Magic of Love”.
Thousands of people came to Singapore to see his performance. And although the savvy pastor didn’t directly share the gospel during the show, his faith was evident in the way he conducted himself, and he was able to share his faith with fans afterward.
His story is a great testament to how God can use a magician with a “secret identity” to reach the world for Him.*
