Lucy Liu opens up about a terrifying chapter from her past.
Speaking to People Magazine, the actress revealed that she had undergone surgery once she was wrongly diagnosed with cancer.
In the 1990s, she discovered a lump in her breast and sought medical advice. At that time, the doctor diagnosed it as cancer and trusting the diagnosis, Liu proceeded with surgery to remove the lump.
Liu said of her cancer diagnosis, “I didn’t really think too much about it. But it was scary, because at the time, there was less information available, because we didn’t have the Internet.”
Now, decades later, the Devil Wears Prada 2 actress reflects on her journey, saying, “I think that was the beginning of understanding how to advocate for yourself.”
Lucy Liu recalled, “Even though my friend said to get a second opinion, I thought, ‘Okay, what’s the point? The doctor knows what they’re talking about.'”
Additionally, the actress stressed the importance of early diagnosis through cancer screening, saying, “It’s not about fixing, it’s really about understanding what screening is, and about information and advocacy. That’s a really important thing.”
“And even though there’s a lot available to us technologically, a lot of people don’t do it because they don’t want to know if something is wrong or they’re too busy. … (But) as busy as you are, it’s a life-saving thing, because, a lot of times, it’s too late to catch on, and at that time, you’re basically struggling to figure out what your resources are.”
