Australia has appointed a woman as the head of the country’s army for the first time since its establishment 125 years ago.
The decision, which will mark the first time a woman will command Australia’s military, came as Defense Minister Richard Marles announced on Monday the “hugely historic” appointment.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle was named Australia’s army chief of staff after a three-decade career during which she has served in the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
“Her achievement means she will be the first woman in Australian history to command a service,” Marles told reporters.
“And this is an extremely historic moment. As Suzanne said to me, you can’t be what you can’t see.”
Australia’s military is in the process of a major transformation, equipping itself with long-range weapons, drones and other modern warfare equipment.
Koel emphasized on his experience in areas like cyber-warfare.
“This breadth of experience provides a strong foundation for the command responsibilities and trust placed in me,” he said.
Australia has appointed a new army chief days ahead of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first visit since they stepped down as senior royals in 2020.
