Prince Harry gave a powerful speech on fatherhood and mental health during an event in Melbourne on the second day of his visit to Australia.
Speaking at the launch of a report by men’s health charity Movember on the mental well-being of fathers with young children, the Duke of Sussex explained how becoming a parent changed his perspective.
Harry said every generation should try to raise children better than the previous one and urged fathers to speak out about their struggles and seek support rather than keeping quiet.
“The world around us has changed massively, so there’s no version of parenting that will be the same as what we’ve experienced,” she said.
Meghan Markle’s husband said, “I see parenting evolving all the time. From my perspective, our kids are our upgrades.
“I wasn’t taught that way, but that’s my take on it. I wouldn’t say I’m superior to my father or that my kids are superior to me.
“That’s the approach I take, knowing that with the way the world is going, the kids we’re raising need to be innovative in today’s world.”
“Even if you have the best upbringing in the world, the best upbringing in the world, there is still room for improvement.”
Harry then talked about the fact that fathers should step in to help if they are struggling.
“For so many years it’s been seen as a weakness to raise my hands. I think it’s the opposite. The more it hurts me to talk about it, the more I want to stand up and talk about it. I know that if I shut up about it – how will that affect everyone else?”
