TL;DR
- ChatGPT may soon let you upload your own “reference photo.”
- This will allow you to generate trendy images more quickly using ChatGPT.
- You will also be able to change or delete your images once you upload them.
AI-generated images have spawned and promoted countless social media trends, and there’s a good chance you’ve probably tried some, if not all, of them. ChatGPT’s dedicated Images section, or Google Photos’ Remix and “Create with AI” features, make it very easy to recreate your images in trending styles. But there is still a big source of friction, and that is that you need to add your images every time you need to create new images.
With an upcoming update, OpenAI may solve this, letting you add an image that you can use whenever you need to create something new.
It appears that OpenAI is now working on an option to add a “reference photo” that you can use to generate images with ChatGPT. Once added, you won’t need to upload an image every time you want to create a new avatar or move on to a new trend.
We’ve discovered a new flow for adding reference photos in version 1.2026.104 beta of the ChatGPT app for Android. This feature is currently inactive and hidden in the code, but we were able to activate it with some under-the-hood tweaking.
Along with this, we have learned that OpenAI is planning to add an option under the Memories section of ChatGPT that will allow you to upload a reference photo. For this you can either choose an existing photo saved in your phone’s gallery or take a new selfie.
Once added, the reference photo will be available for viewing and can also be replaced with another photo later. We also see a trash icon, suggesting that users will be able to delete their photos if they wish. Unlike memories in general, ChatGPT may not have an option to directly recall your photo from a previous chat.

Although we enabled the interface for adding reference photos, we couldn’t use ChatGPT to actually create new images. This shows that OpenAI still has one final coat of paint left to apply. We will share updates once we know more.
