Almost everyone who sticks to their workout routine has found a type of fitness they like. This might mean taking CrossFit classes several times a week, going for a run every morning, or hiring a personal trainer to give them a customized workout. However, everything has a price. So let’s talk about what you’ll spend in a variety of scenarios, from the cost of each type of gym, to the upgrades you make, to the comparative cost of home options.

Cost of Joining a No-Frills Gym

What’s needed to get started: The main cost here is the subscription itself. Rent for budget chain gyms like Crunch and Planet Fitness can be as low as $10 or $20 per month, while slightly nicer places can be around $50 or more. (You could easily pay $100/month or more at a higher-end place.) However, be wary of extra fees in the fine print – you’ll often find an annual fee hidden in there, and using a credit card instead of a bank withdrawal will incur a surcharge. For your first day, you’ll need a gym bag with some basic necessities like athletic-appropriate shoes, clothing, and a water bottle. These vary in cost, but you probably already have these items at home.

Possible upgrades: A good personal trainer can walk you through the workouts, which can reduce your uncertainty about what exactly to do. to do Making sure you’re following a program that will lead you to your goals, whatever they may be. Lesson, Estimate An hour-long session with a trainer can average $40 to $100, depending on your area and how attractive your gym is.

If you don’t work with a trainer, you’ll have to plan your workouts on your own and stick to your goals. Free or paid training programs or online trainers can fill this gap; The prices on them vary wildly. Try Nike Training Club for a free option, or Fitbod ($15.99/month) for some great options.

Do it at home: There’s no way to completely recreate the gym experience at home, because that’s the whole reason for going to the gym. they have all the stuff. But you can make do with a collection of dumbbells or resistance bands, a barbell with weights if you can afford one, and maybe a cardio machine or some running shoes. The price of this investment depends on how much gear you want to accumulate. Here are the first 14 things I purchased for the perfect home gym.

How much does it cost to get into functional fitness

CrossFit is no longer the only big name in functional fitness. Gyms that follow a class-based structure, mixing cardio and strength with timed workouts, are thriving under various brands like F45. Hyrocks races are becoming popular, and you can train for them in functional fitness boxes. These studios often seem like they should be cheaper than commercial gyms filled with machines, but you get more personal interaction and coaching than the money costs.

What’s needed to get started: These are some of the most expensive gyms out there. Lesson, Estimate The average CrossFit membership is $150-200 per month for unlimited classes; This seems to match what I’m seeing for other types of functional fitness memberships. Like a regular gym, you’ll need basic athletic clothing and gear to get started.

Possible upgrades: Functional fitness enthusiasts often stock up on specialty items like a variety of shoes, rope climbing socks, and more. Since the sport involves components of lifting, gymnastics and cardio, you may need more gear than in a gym where you’re only doing a few things all the time. If you get serious about sports, you may have to pay extra for more gym time or classes.

Do it at home: Like a commercial gym, purchasing the necessary equipment will become expensive very quickly. But plenty of CrossFit-style workouts can be done without any equipment: think burpees and running. You can search for free workout ideas on Google, or sign up for an online service like Street Parking, which offers at-home workouts for $19/month.

    Cost of Indoor Cycling

What’s needed to get started: Classes at the studio typically range from $20-40, with packages and memberships dropping the cost slightly. Brand names matter a lot: My local Cyclebar offer 10-class pack for $209; In the same area, SoulCycle charge $280. But boutique studios aren’t your only option. Commercial gyms and community fitness centers sometimes include cycling classes as part of a membership or as an add-on package, often at a significantly reduced price.

What do you think so far?

Possible upgrades: If you do this long enough, you’ll eventually need your own shoes, which cost around $100 for a good quality pair.

Do it at home: Peloton is the classic choice here, and there are other companies that will sell you similar smart bikes. Peloton’s bikes start at $1,695, and membership on top of that is $49/month. You can also use the inexpensive Peloton app (or another app like Apple Fitness+) with an indoor bike you already have, or you can put your bike on an indoor trainer for a completely DIY experience.

how much does it cost to start running

Running is the classic cheap fitness hobby, but it has a lot of hidden costs, especially as you get more serious. My marathon running colleague Meredith Dietz has a description here that gets into specifics, but here’s an overview:

What’s needed to get started: Shoes for starters. If you have some old sneakers that don’t hurt your feet, you’ll be fine, but pretty soon you’ll probably end up buying a pair of real running shoes for around $100. And if you have breasts, a quality sports bra is a must. Depending on how much support you need, you’re looking at $20 to $100. (Wash it by hand after every race, and you might get away with only one or two.)

Possible upgrades: Once you get serious about running, chances are you’ll want a watch that can track your speed and other metrics like your heart rate. (Serious runners love Garmin; Fitbits or Apple Watches work for most of us normal folks.) I’ve written a list of the best entry-level running watches, all for under $250.

And then there are the races. Entry fees for local 5Ks can be $25 or more, but marathons and half-marathons easily cost $100 and more. Big-ticket marathons can cost $300 if you can get in, and then sometimes runners will plan vacations around their dream races, driving the cost up. This is a game that can cost as much or as little as you want.
