The horrific discovery was made in a cemetery in the town of Quemuto, Trinidad, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of the capital Port of Spain.
According to a police statement, 50 bodies were of infants while the remaining were of four men and two women. Police said five adults had tags on their toes, like those found in a morgue, and the bodies of a man and a woman had autopsy marks. He did not immediately say whether any bodies had been identified.
Police said they are working to determine the origin of the human remains and any related violations of law or procedure.
“Each body must be handled with respect and legal care,” Police Commissioner Alistair Guevaro said in a statement. “Any individual or entity found to be in breach of that duty will be held fully accountable.”
