Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf says progress has been made in talks with Washington, but differences remain over nuclear issues and the Strait of Hormuz.
Parliament Speaker and top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has said that Iran will not bow to American pressure. He stressed that progress has been made in the talks, although fundamental issues still remain unresolved.
The first round of US-Iran talks took place in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad last weekend. Following the talks, US President Donald Trump announced a blockade of Iranian ports and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about 25% of global crude oil trade.
On Friday, Iran opened the waterway to all commercial vessels, a move designed as part of a ceasefire arrangement tied to the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire and broader regional de-escalation efforts. However, the strait was closed again the next day after Trump said the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would continue in full force until a peace deal was reached.
“We will stand till the end,” Ghalibaf said in a televised address early Sunday.
He reiterated that the Iranian delegation had gone to Islamabad “With goodwill but amid deep mistrust,” Emphasizing that Tehran would be prepared for war if necessary.
“We are still far from a final agreement,” Ghalibaf urged the US to earn the trust of the Iranian people. “Overall, I can say that progress has been made in the negotiations, but shortcomings are still significant and some fundamental issues are still unresolved.”
Ghalibaf also said that the US is planning to infiltrate Iran through waves of unrest from its western and eastern borders, adding that regime change efforts and “Venezuelization” Iran’s—aimed at selling the country’s oil—has failed.
“It is clear that the enemy was defeated, but that is different from saying that we destroyed his army,” He said.
Trump said this to reporters on Saturday “Very nice conversation” are happening, but stressed that he will not allow Iran to do so “Blackmail” US on the Strait of Hormuz
