Study links stress to autoimmune risk, and women bear it the most

Four out of every five people with autoimmune disease in the United States are women. This statistic is at the center of a viral Internet meme now circulating with thousands of likes on TikTok, threads, and Instagram, which makes an obvious claim: that women are making themselves sick by being too sociable and that “being a bitch” is the cure.

Science does not support this solution. But the despair behind it points to something real.

What does stress-autoimmune research really show?

This meme is based on actual scientific studies. In a study conducted in 2018, it was found that a clinical diagnosis of a stress-related disorder was significantly related to an increased risk of developing autoimmune diseases. In another study conducted in 2020, it was reported that PTSD patients are 58 percent more likely to die than individuals without this mental disorder.

For a long time, it has been observed that a relationship exists between psychological stress and increased cortisol production in addition to systemic inflammation.

What the meme leaves out is the difference between correlation and individual prescription. No peer-reviewed studies have examined whether self-described “people pleasers” cause autoimmune flares, or whether adopting a more assertive personality reverses them. Claims that having “love and light” causes IBS, or that setting strong personal boundaries allows the body to heal itself, are social media extrapolations, not clinical evidence.

The meme reaches its cultural moment through its current arrival. Economic research measuring self-reported well-being shows that women’s happiness levels have declined during the past twenty years.

Economists and commentators have documented existing problems regarding the persistence of unequal domestic and emotional labor burdens, the impact of pandemic-era caregiving on women, and the medical misogyny that characterizes how clinical staff treat women’s pain through dismissive and investigative limitations. The concept that continued pleasant behavior creates health problems because social training requires physical sacrifice exists as a valid scientific hypothesis.

However, it is much more complex than the TikTok format allows. Autoimmune disease involves genetic, hormonal, environmental, and immunological factors that no amount of behavioral change can override.

Researchers have proposed several mechanisms for why women develop autoimmune conditions at higher rates: hormonal differences, Stress is a variable contributing to a complex picture, not one to control.
