There was a time when I was totally into the idea that fragrances should be subtle. As a beauty editor, I get to try a lot of great perfumes, and over the past few years, I’ve noticed that my shelf was filling up with soft skin scents, cozy musks and barely-there mists that sit close to the skin and only make their presence known when one gets close. Perhaps the change came with motherhood, where it felt safer and easier to blend in rather than stand out. Also, I never liked that a strong scent would get on my little ones’ clothes and skin and mask the baby’s heady smell.
However, lately, I’ve found that I want something different from my perfumes and have been exploring scents with a little more presence and intention. My children are not so young anymore, and as they grow up in independence, I long to return to my children. And though my inner confidence has wavered compared to a few years ago, I’ve always found that scent can act as a shortcut to faking it ’til you make it.
Again, I’m grateful that power perfumes are back for 2026 — but not in the way we remember. This time, it’s less about the heady, room-filling scent of the ’80s that announces your arrival before you even walk out the door, and more about scents that help enhance your inner spark. Forget about making an entrance, these perfumes will decide how you carry yourself once you walk inside the room.
What is power perfume?
“Power perfumes today are more about identity than impact,” explains Perfume creator and Iggywoo founder Richard Saint-Ford. “A lot of people in the ’80s and ’90s wore the same kind of big, recognizable fragrances, so the power of that time came from familiarity – you smelled it and knew exactly what it was. Now, a power perfume is about presence… wearing something that feels like a personal signature and adds to your sense of self.”
I’ve started to think of these fragrances as an invisible layer of armor. They don’t overwhelm, but they do shift something internally – a subtle boost of confidence, a feeling of being pulled together and a sense of certainty about who you are. And this means that the very definition of power perfume has come out in the open. For me, a powerful scent can be rooted in some relaxing notes that I love, like violet and musk, mixed with something more unusual and energetic, like citrus.
“Today, you often see the strong backbone of sandalwood, cedarwood, cashmere and tonka bean, which give modern power perfumes structure and that grounded, expensive feel,” explains saint-ford. “But what really defines it is the balance. You have warmth against freshness and familiarity against something unexpected. That contradiction is what creates the presence now.”
So, if you’re ready for a confidence boost, keep scrolling. These are great power perfumes that will remind you who you are, and make sure everyone else knows it too.
best power perfume
1. Review of qualifications
merit beauty
Retrospect L’Extract de Parfum
Key Notes: Bergamot, Pear, Ambrette, Aldehyde, Jasmine, Rose, Rosemary, Violet, Orris, Vanilla, Musk, Moss
To me, Merit Retrospect is a modern classic that has already won the approval of industry fragrance experts and discerning beauty editors. Its allure lies in the fact that it’s undeniably easy to wear, and has an almost youthful air to it, thanks to that juicy pear note, yet it also has a power to it. It’s a mix of everything I love about perfume – nostalgia, comfort and freshness – but still smells extremely expensive and thoroughly modern. Whenever I wear it I feel like the sharpest, most put-together woman I’ve ever been, yet the familiar florals and soft musks mean I still undoubtedly feel like me. And what is more powerful than that?
2. 27 87 Elixir de Bombay
27 87
Elixir de Bombay Eau de Parfum
Key Notes: Tangerine, Red Pepper, Ginger, Ylang-Ylang, Rock Rose, Raspberry, Caramel, Leather, Amber
On occasions when I want to feel a little fearless, this is the perfume I use. Warm, slightly spicy and with a sweetness that feels adult rather than sweet, it’s perfect for those moments where I want to stand out a little more. Whether it’s a work event where I don’t know anyone, a night out, or even an appointment where I know I’ll have to advocate for myself, this scent gives me that little extra push, thanks to its lively blend of spicy tangerine, spicy ginger, and grounding amber.
3. Parfums de Marly Delina
perfumes de marly
Delina Eau De Parfum
Key Notes: Rhubarb, Lychee, Bergamot Essence, Turkish Rose, Peony, Vanilla, Musk, Vetiver
Arguably Parfums de Marly’s most iconic fragrance, Delina is instantly recognizable if you pass someone on the street wearing it. Still, you’ll find that strangers will stop to ask what you have, if they’ve never seen it before. It’s definitely pink-heavy (a note I love), and yet, there’s a tartness to the rhubarb that keeps it from feeling too bland. I wear this when I want to feel polished and a little more upscale, because it definitely smells expensive. And I love that it has that balance of being noticeable and familiar, without being totally overbearing.
4. Iggywoo Cherry Love Extreme
iggywoo
Cherry Love Extreme Eau De Parfum
Key Notes: Pink Pepper, Cherry, Violet, Rose, Clove, Cherry Accord, Vanilla Bean, Amber, Sandalwood, Patchouli
By their own volition, there is something about cherry perfumes that I think automatically present themselves as perfumes with natural power. The depth, fruitiness and unexpected nature of the cherries in the scent means this is a great place to start if you’re looking for a confident scent. This one from Iggywoo is rich, dark, and adult, and gives me that little shift in energy where I feel a little more active and my choices are more intentional. Plus, it makes one feel confident without trying too hard, which is exactly what I want from my power perfume.
5. Yves Saint Laurent Libre
Yves Saint Laurent
libre eau de parfum
Key Notes: lavender, orange blossom, jasmine, vanilla
Needing no introduction, YSL’s Libre seems like the most traditional power perfume on this list, yet it still feels fresh. This is an incredibly versatile scent – I know several people who have worn it on their wedding day and to job interviews – because it’s basically confidence in a bottle. Jasmine gives it a slightly heady sillage, while orange blossom and lavender add a bit of softness. And while it projects a lot more than some of the others, it’s not overwhelming by any means. This is a classically beautiful statement-maker of a perfume
6. Bond No. 9 West Side
bond number 9
West Side Eau De Parfum
Key Notes: Rose, Ylang Ylang, Peony, Sandalwood, Amber, Vanilla, Musk
It’s a sweet, quick injection of energy that’s perfect for days when you’re feeling unsure or a little low. It’s a layered, full-bodied floral, entwined with the depth of sandalwood and amber, that feels confident on days when you can’t, while the soft familiarity of vanilla and musk surrounds you. When things start to get a little out of control, but you don’t want to show it, this is one of the ways to reach out.
7. Byredo Velvet Mist
Key Notes: Ambrette, coconut water, patchouli leaves, coco absolu, wild musk
I change my perfumes so often that it’s hard to pinpoint one specific scent, but if I’m pressed, I’ll end up with this one. And sometimes the power lies in the comfort of familiarity. It’s a cozy, warm and comfortable scent that still has an underlying confidence, so it’s a perfume I reach for when I want to feel good in my own skin without thinking too much. The coconut has a soft sweetness, balanced with the musk, and it sits quite close to the skin, so it has a way of attracting people. A friend once said it smelled like me, which I guess proves it should make an impact.
8. Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club
maison margiela replica
jazz club eau de toilette
Key Notes: Pink Pepper, Neroli Oil, Rum Absolute, Sage Oil, Tobacco Leaf Absolute, Vanilla Bean
There are a lot of maison margiela replica perfumes that would fit as modern power perfumes, but it is their hero scent, Jazz Club, that I have chosen. It’s bold, boozy and straightforward – a blend of smoky tobacco, warm vanilla and a slightly alcoholic edge. To me, this sounds like the promise of an amazing night and it makes for a really intentional date night if that’s what you want.
9. Bibby Tom’s Ghost
bibby
Ghost of Tom Eau De Parfum
Key Notes: Bergamot, Mate, Blackcurrant, Ceylon Black Tea, Violet Leaves, Birch Tree, Papyrus, Black Amber
This is a perfume with a bit of an edge – it’s a bit smoky, a bit cliché and undeniably sexy. Yet reading this it may seem like this is a perfume that will grab your attention as soon as you enter a room, and while it certainly appeals to the imagination, it’s actually quite a down-to-earth scent. The blend of herbal elements and ground notes like black tea, birch and violet leaves means it’s fragrant yet subtle enough to feel wearable. I’ll spritz this on occasions where I want my personality to shine without feeling overly sophisticated.
10. Eccentric Molecule 01
eccentric molecule
Molecule 01 Eau De Toilette
Key Notes: iso e super
I know I started this article declaring that I wanted to move away from skin scents, but Escentric Molecules is a brand that challenges this category entirely. Some days I barely notice it when I wear it, while other days I catch a glimpse of it and remember exactly why I love it. It is woody, warm, fresh and clean, and effectively enhances your essence. Superpower perfume, perhaps? Yes, it’s subtle, but trust me when I say you’ll get lots of “your scent is amazing” compliments from those close to you.
11. Diptyque Orpheon
Diptyque
Orphean Eau De Parfum
Key Notes: Juniper Berry, Tonka Bean, Cedar
For work days when I need to feel stable and dependable, Orphean is a little woody, a little powdery, beautifully fresh and really balanced – nothing feels too much about it, but it still has presence. Fellow Who What Wear UK beauty editors, who also love Orphean, refer to it as French-girl allure, and it really does convey a sense of cool confidence. It is attractive, elegant and truly unique.
