A man shot a Canadian woman to death and six others on Monday at Mexico’s Teotihuacan pyramids, a popular tourist and archaeological site outside Mexico City, according to authorities.
Mexico’s security cabinet said the injured were receiving medical care. Canada’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
“We are deeply saddened by what happened today in Teotihuacan,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Twitter. She said she was monitoring the situation closely and her government was in contact with the Canadian Embassy.
“I have directed the Security Cabinet to thoroughly investigate these incidents and provide all necessary assistance. Personnel from the Interior and Culture Secretariat are already en route to the site to provide assistance and cooperation with local authorities.”
The pre-Hispanic city was one of the most important cultural centers of Mesoamerica.
