The FBI is leading the investigation into a series of deaths and disappearances of scientists linked to sensitive US laboratories, although officials say there is no clear evidence linking the cases.
In a statement Tuesday, the bureau said it was “leading an effort to find connections to the missing and deceased scientists. We are working with the Department of Energy, the War Department and our state and local law enforcement partners to find answers,” according to CBS News.
The cases involve 10 individuals over a three-year period, including employees associated with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
These incidents have fueled widespread speculation online about possible links or targeted attacks.
However, investigators and experts have rejected those claims. A former Energy Department official told CBS News: “People die. Strokes, hearing loss, suicide, looting, it happens.”
President Donald Trump also commented on the situation, saying: “I just left a meeting on that topic, very serious thing. Hopefully, coincidental… but some of them were very important people, and we’ll look into it.”
