Chennai Super Kings have given strong indications that MS Dhoni could return for their big clash against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 on April 23 at the Wankhede Stadium.
The talk of Dhoni’s comeback gained momentum after CSK shared a practice video from Mumbai on April 21. The clip showed the veteran wicketkeeper sprinting behind the stumps and delivering a clean stumping.
CSK batting coach Michael Hussey also looked positive. He said that Dhoni is ‘progressing well’ and batting well in the nets, which has raised hopes among the fans.
Dhoni is said to be close to being fully fit, but the last step is to gain complete confidence in his running between the wickets. Quick singles and doubles remain the only areas of concern before returning to match action.
MS Dhoni’s injury and recovery
Dhoni missed all of CSK’s matches in IPL 2026 due to a calf strain just before the start of the season. The injury kept him out longer than expected.
Initially, CSK had planned a two-week recovery period. However, the rehab lasted three weeks, with the team taking no risks with their senior player.
In recent times, Dhoni has focused on improving his speed and agility during training sessions. His presence at Wankhede could be special, as it is the same venue where he led India to the 2011 World Cup win.
It is important for CSK to win this match
CSK is under severe pressure in this match. They have got only two wins in six matches and are currently placed eighth in the points table.
CSK will now have to win at least six of their remaining eight matches to reach the safe mark of 16 points for the playoffs. There is very little margin for error.
His net run rate of -0.780 is another matter of concern. To stay in the race, it is now important not just to win but also to win big.
Interestingly, Mumbai Indians are also struggling at the lower level. This will make the April 23 match a virtual knockout game for both the teams.
Defeat here can almost end the playoff hopes for any side. That is why Dhoni’s possible return could not have been a bigger opportunity for CSK.
