How can I despise you? Some British researchers are counting the ways people across the country are asking people to send them abuses and insults, about which outsiders would have little knowledge.
“We’re really interested in words that only make sense if you’re from a particular place,” said Chris Montgomery, a senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield who is leading the effort with Modern Toss, an arts group.
Dr. Montgomery said his hope is to preserve the diversity of slang used in Britain, especially if they are ambiguous. “It’s a real window to people’s creativity with language,” he said.
