(WORTH NEWS) – A sharp decline in violent crime in the nation’s capital is drawing renewed attention to law enforcement policies under President Donald Trump, as federal officials point to more aggressive public safety tactics as a key driver behind the change.
Nearly 20 murders have been recorded so far this year in Washington, DC, according to updated data — a drop of nearly 75 percent compared to 2023 levels. If current trends continue, the city is expected to see about 42 murders in 2026, which would be the lowest number of murders since the 1930s.
Carjackings have also declined significantly, falling by about 44 percent, while arrests related to violent crimes have increased sharply.
Federal officials and local observers say the shift follows a series of policy changes emphasizing enforcement, accountability and increased law enforcement visibility throughout the city.
A newly appointed U.S. attorney has replaced his predecessor, who was widely criticized for lenient prosecution practices, and moved quickly to pursue tougher charges, including seeking the death penalty in the most serious cases. Also, authorities ended former policies that limited charging juveniles as adults — a move authorities say previously encouraged gangs to recruit minors for serious crimes such as armed carjacking.
The impact has been measurable. The arrest-conviction ratio for carjackings increased from about 25 percent to 58 percent last year, indicating a substantial increase in enforcement effectiveness.
Federal support has also played a major role. After years of budget cuts that have left local police staffing at historically low levels, federal law enforcement agencies – along with the deployment of the National Guard – have stepped in to bolster public safety operations across the capital.
The White House says the administration’s “Make DC Safe and Beautiful” task force has been central to the effort. According to officials, this initiative resulted in:
- Over 9,100 violent fugitives arrested
- 25 murder suspects detained
- More than 1,500 arrests related to drugs
- Over 770 weapons crime arrests
- Seizure of more than 900 illegal firearms
- Dozens of gang members and sex offenders were caught
US Attorney Jeanine Pirro described the results as “clear”, noting that communities are experiencing tangible improvements in safety.
A White House spokesperson emphasized that the administration is focused on the “relentless pursuit” of violent criminals, arguing that consistent enforcement and clear results are restoring order to the city.
Despite the data, critics have noted relatively limited national media coverage of the crime decline, even though the numbers represent one of the most significant public safety improvements in decades for the capital.
Supporters of the administration’s approach argue that the results highlight a broader principle: Prioritizing law enforcement, prosecuting repeat offenders, and removing illegal weapons from the streets can rapidly reverse crime trends.
As violence in Washington, D.C., continues to decline, the development is likely to add fuel to the ongoing national debate over crime policy, policing, and the balance between reform and enforcement in America’s major cities.
