King Charles is expected to meet New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York during your trip Next week, according to two people familiar with the planning.
The unlikely pair will attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 memorial in downtown Manhattan on Wednesday. The event will also include former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other New York government officials, according to the two people, who requested anonymity to discuss private plans.
Mamdani, the son of one of the world’s foremost postcolonial theorists, will have a camera-ready moment when he welcomes the man whose ancestors oversaw the British imperial project that was the basis of his father Mahmoud Mamdani’s academic career.
King Charles’s stop at the 9/11 memorial is the kind of standard royal visit fare aimed at cementing the countries’ close security partnership and shared sacrifice. The Mayor of New York is a natural part of that kind of programming.
The pair have one thing in common: They both get along well with President Donald Trump.
Spokespeople for Mamdani and Bloomberg did not immediately respond to questions.
