Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a major blow midway through the ongoing IPL 2026 as their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of their crucial match against Gujarat Titans due to injury. This setback has come at a bad time for CSK, as they are already struggling badly this season.
Although there is no official update on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s fitness, former Zimbabwe bowler and commentator Pommy Mbangwa revealed that the CSK captain has suffered an injury which has ruled him out of the Gujarat Titans match in Chennai on Sunday (April 26).
Sanju Samson ready to lead CSK with Ruturaj Gaikwad out
Mbangwa also hinted that Sanju Samson will take over the captaincy for the CSK vs GT match. However, there is still no clarity on MS Dhoni’s availability. So, now they will have to adjust the entire team combination, but Samson will not only lead the team but will also handle the responsibility of wicketkeeping.

“The news is that Ruturaj Gaikwad will not be available. Injuries and so on. So that’s the first part of things as far as CSK are concerned: who does the captaincy? Going through a tough time. So that means there’s a whole story to unravel,” Pomi Mbangwa said on Cricbuzz.
It is possible that Sanju takes over the captaincy and looks after the team and wait for Ruturaj to come back. He is in good form. It’s always good to see him back. It is good that he has maintained his form since the T20 World Cup. As far as you know who replaces whom and who comes in. The big question will always be there, and it has been throughout the season.”
