OpenAI falls short of revenue targets, sparking internal debate over move towards IPO

OpenAI has reportedly underperformed against its user base and revenue in recent months, raising concerns among company leaders about its ability to sustain its massive AI infrastructure investment.

CFO Sarah Fryer has reportedly expressed concerns to leadership that OpenAI may struggle to secure a standardized agreement, as revenue growth has failed to meet expectations.

The report further claims that OpenAI has experienced a steady revenue decline earlier this year after losing market share to Anthropic in the coding and enterprise sectors.

OpenAI previously launched an aggressive effort to secure the vast infrastructure needed for AI, reflecting rapid spending by tech giants on data centers.

Addressing rumors of internal friction, CEO and co-founder Sam Altman said: “This is ridiculous. We completely agree on buying as many computers as possible and working hard on it together every day.”

According to a report by wall street journalChatGPT’s growth slowed significantly toward the end of last year, suggesting that OpenAI may fall short of its goal of reaching one billion weekly active users by the end of 2026.

Citing the report reutersIt was further claimed that the company was satisfied with customer defection. Although OpenAI has raised billions of dollars in fresh funding, it expects to spend the majority of those funds on computing infrastructure over the next three years to meet aggressive expansion goals.

OpenAI also informed investors that it has achieved significantly greater computing capacity than its rival Anthropic.

As a result, CFO Sarah Fryer has expressed concerns about a potential initial public offering, stressing the need to strengthen internal controls to meet public market requirements.
