Accra(meaningful news) – A military convoy carrying civilians was fired upon in northern Ghana on Monday, killing at least three civilians and wounding one, officials said, highlighting ongoing violence in a region rocked by years of unrest.
The Ghana Armed Forces said the convoy was protecting about 140 civilians traveling from Bawku towards Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region when unknown assailants opened fire multiple times near the town of Binduri.
The army said troops returned fire, killing seven attackers. Troops recovered weapons including a G3 automatic rifle and ammunition, while ten suspects were arrested and are assisting in the investigation.
The attack is the latest in a cycle of violence linked to a long-running dispute between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups over who has the right to appoint traditional chiefs in Bawku.
The conflict has killed more than 300 people since 2021 and spread beyond Bawku into surrounding areas including Binduri, raising concerns about deteriorating security in a country long seen as one of West Africa’s more stable countries.
Authorities imposed a nightly curfew on Binduri in March 2025 to curb violence, which was lifted in February 2026 after what officials described as an improvement in the security situation.
Christians are also affected
While the conflict is primarily rooted in ethnic and religious disputes rather than religion, Christians are among those affected in northern Ghana, where communities are often religiously mixed.
Open Doors says Ghana is not among the countries where Christians face systematic persecution and is not listed among the most severe countries on its World Watch List.
However, church leaders say that insecurity, displacement and recurring violence, among others, have disrupted Christian communities, affecting church gatherings, schooling and daily life.
The broader Sahel region has seen a surge in Islamic extremist activity in recent years, raising concerns that instability could spread further, though officials insist the violence in Bawku is locally motivated.
For now, residents of the Upper East region remain in danger as authorities try to prevent further attacks and restore stability.
