Google is replacing the familiar Google Assistant on your car’s dashboard with something more interactive: Gemini. If your car has Google built-in, this upgrade is coming sooner than you might expect.
When Google first put its software directly into vehicle dashboards in 2020, the company promised that your car would actually get smarter over time. This update delivers on that promise. Gemini will be available not only in new cars, but also in your current vehicle via over-the-air updates.
The main change is that you no longer need to use strict commands. Now, you can talk to your car naturally. For example, if you want an upscale sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating on your route, just ask. auxiliary uses Google Maps to find options, and you can search for “Do they have vegetarian options?” You can ask follow-up questions like: Or check parking.

Navigation is now more aware of your position. You can ask if a stadium event will affect your drive or report an accident in your lane to help others. Texting while driving is also smarter. Gemini can summarize incoming messages so you can reply with all the details. You can also edit your message as you wish without having to start over.
For music and media, the software works with apps like YouTube Music and understands your requests. On long trips, the new Gemini Live beta lets you have free-flowing conversations that you can pause or interrupt. You can tap the Gemini Live button or say “Hey Google, let’s talk” to get ideas for hiking trails in Tahoe.

Google worked with car manufacturers to build AI into your car’s hardware. This means you can ask how to prepare your model for an automatic car wash or how to adjust the trunk height for a low garage, and it will give you specific answers. Keep in mind, the level of detail depends on the make and model of your car.
If you drive an EV, you’ll get real-time updates about your battery. You can check your estimated battery level when you arrive, look for a nearby charger, or even ask Gemini to find you a café where you can relax while your car charges.
The update will be available in English in the United States first, with other countries and languages coming soon. To receive the upgrade, make sure you’re signed in to your Google Account in your car. Once it’s ready, you can press your steering wheel button, tap the mic, or simply say “Hey Google” to start using it.
Soon, Assistant will be able to securely access your Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home data right from the driver’s seat.

I like being able to talk naturally instead of having to remember commands, especially when handling navigation, messaging, and music simultaneously. That said, Google has promised smarter assistants before, but they haven’t always worked out well in real life. If Gemini remains accurate and doesn’t misunderstand you while driving, it’s a win. Otherwise, it’ll just be another highly touted feature that you’ll ignore after a week, except now that it’s included in your car.
