Somerhalder, who stepped away from acting about seven years ago following major financial turmoil, shared, “I left a very lucrative career in television after the financial turmoil of building a business I didn’t properly build.”
According to Somerhalder, fraud associated with the venture pushed him and his wife, Nikki Reed, into an “eight-figure hole”.
The actor said, “It’s a tough hole to climb out of eight figures, but Nikki and I did it. We sold houses, paintings, cars, watches, everything.”
Crediting Reed for playing a major role in helping him rebuild his financial stability during a “true nightmare”, Somerhalder said the experience taught him lessons about business and risk management.
Notably, Ian Somerhalder admitted that he could have taken a different path, saying, “I should have retired from one of the biggest TV shows in the world.”
