The purpose of Pope Leo XIV’s prayer for the month of May is that everyone may have food.
one in Video released on XThe Holy Father asked the faithful: “What do you feel about 318 million people facing acute hunger every day?”
“We need to take action, but without prayer we will remain powerless,” he said. “This May, I invite you to join me in prayer so that we can seriously commit to stopping food waste and ensuring that everyone has access to quality food every day.”
In the full video, shared on the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network website, Pope Leo recites an original prayer written specifically for this month’s prayer intentions.
Here is the Pope’s full prayer:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Lord of creation,
You gave us fertile land and along with it you also gave us our daily bread,
As a sign of your love and providence.
Today we recognize with sadness
That millions of brothers and sisters continue to suffer from hunger,
Whereas a lot of stuff gets wasted on our tables.
Awaken a new consciousness within us:
That we learn to give thanks for every meal,
to consume easily,
sharing with happiness,
And take care of the produce of the earth by donating from your side,
Destined not just for some but for all.
good father,
Enable us to change the logic of selfish consumption
In a culture of solidarity.
Our community promotes concrete actions:
Awareness campaigns, food banks,
And a calm and responsible lifestyle.
You sent us your beloved son Jesus,
Broken bread for the life of the world,
Give us a new heart hungry for justice and thirsty for brotherhood.
No one should be left out of the common table,
And may your spirit teach us to see bread
Not as a consumption item,
But as a sign of communion and care.
Amen.
