Two United States service members are missing in southwestern Morocco after participating in a multinational military exercise near the Atlantic coast, according to the United States Africa Command.
AFRICOM said search and rescue operations were underway with US, Moroccan and allied forces taking part in the annual African Lion military exercise.
“The incident remains under investigation and the search is ongoing,” Africom said in a statement.
The incident reportedly occurred on 2 May near the Cap Dra training area near Tan Tan. Moroccan military officials said the service member disappeared near a cliff.
“Initial reports indicate that both soldiers may have fallen into the sea. I can confirm that this incident is not related to terrorism,” a US defense official told Reuters by email.
African Lion is the largest annual joint military exercise led by the United States in Africa. The exercise, which began in 2004, involves troops from multiple countries and is designed to improve military coordination and regional security cooperation.
This year’s operation began in April and extends to several African countries, including Tunisia, Ghana and Senegal. The exercise is expected to conclude in early May.
