(WORTH NEWS) – President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States will begin guiding commercial ships out of the Strait of Hormuz, where global shipping is effectively stuck amid the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said several countries had appealed to Washington for help in freeing ships stuck in the vital chokepoint, which normally handles about 20% of the world’s oil supply. He said the US would help ensure ships can safely transit the waterway and resume global commerce.
The initiative, dubbed “Project Freedom”, is scheduled to launch on Monday morning Middle East time. According to a senior US official, the plan involves coordination between governments, insurers and shipping organizations to facilitate safe passage – although it does not currently involve direct US naval escort.
Tensions in the strait have risen sharply after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly deployed naval mines, significantly increasing the risk to commercial vessels. The development has heightened concerns in global markets and energy sectors already shaken by the war.
President Trump warned that any interference in the operation would be dealt with decisively. Underscoring the seriousness of the mission, he said, “If they interfere, it will have to be dealt with firmly.”
