Anthropic saw an 80x year-over-year increase in revenue and usage through the first quarter of 2026, such explosive growth that CEO Dario Amodei joked that his company should have wished for “only 10x” instead.
The rapid growth has exceeded the AI company’s initial infrastructure expectations, leaving its management scrambling to source computing power to meet the overwhelming demands of developers.
Anthropic’s AI coding platform, Cloud Code, unexpectedly turned out to be the key to rapid growth, quickly aligning itself with the software developers who most quickly adopted the new coding tool.
By the end of 2025, the product had so much momentum that Anthropic was able to outperform other players who had ruled the market just a few months earlier. Engineers saw how useful cloud code could be in increasing their productivity, thus sparking an adoption process that neither Anthropic nor its competition had anticipated.
According to Amodei, the rapid uptake among developers was just a taste of the future trend of AI adoption throughout the economy, with coding being just the beginning.
To handle the growing demand, Anthropic announced it has secured 300 MW of new computing power at SpaceX’s Colossus One data center. Ami Vora, head of product at Anthropic, explained that the additional compute chips will extend the length of developer sessions and reduce the latency that plagues the platform.
Amodei has built a reputation as an AI risk skeptic, warning about the dangers of historically rapid adoption and predicting that AI could write “essentially all” the code within a year.
