In a new twist, India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is all set to take over the full-time captaincy from incumbent Shubman Gill, according to a report in NDTV.
Iyer was appointed vice-captain of the ODI team in October 2025, at the same time Gill was appointed captain. Gill was made the captain after Rohit Sharma was removed from this post.
Gill was appointed India’s full-time Test captain in May 2025. Gill has had mixed results as captain in both formats. Now, Shreyas Iyer is sure to be rewarded for his consistency.
“We want a captain in both white-ball formats” – BCCI source on Shreyas Iyer
It seems that this development is due to BCCI’s desire to have the same captain in both ODIs and T20Is. At present Gill is the captain of the ODI team and Suryakumar Yadav is the captain of the T20 team.

According to reports, Suryakumar Yadav is set to be sacked as T20I captain due to his poor form with the bat despite winning the T20 World Cup on home ground in 2026. Neither Gill nor Iyer were part of that team.
Since Shreyas Iyer is the most likely candidate to replace Yadav, the BCCI is taking the opportunity to announce a captain for both ODIs and T20Is.
As reported by NDTV, the source said “A few changes are expected when the new T20 squad is announced. We are considering one player to lead both the T20 and ODI teams. Our focus is on both right now. The BCCI wants to give opportunities to experienced players as well as look at young talent. Shreyas has done very well over the years; his injuries have been unfortunate.”
Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy in the last few years
In 2024, Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title, the same year he led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title.
After this he made Punjab Kings the runner-up in IPL 2025
