    TL;DR

    • Googlebooks are premium Android-powered laptops made by partner manufacturers, and we already know the names of five partners.
    • Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo are on board and are confirmed to be making Googlebook laptops from this autumn.
    • Of the six Chromebook partners Google has listed on its Shop Chromebooks site, Samsung is the only one not ready to make Googlebooks.

A new category of Google laptops is entering the fray, and they’re called googlebooks. Announced during the Android Show I/O edition, Googlebooks are Android-powered laptops that will be made by partner manufacturers starting this autumn. Google plans to share more details about Googlebooks later this year, but it has already revealed teaser renders for the upcoming laptop and the names of the five partners who created them.

So far, we know that Googlebooks runs software built on the Android technology stack and the newly announced Gemini Intelligence. Google also confirmed that Googlebooks will have a premium design with a hallmark “Globar” at the top of the outer lid. The exact design and form factor will vary for each Googlebook model, but the emphasis on build quality and premium materials will remain the same across all brands.

This isn’t the first time Google has partnered with manufacturers to create laptops, so it’s not surprising that the company is calling on five Chromebook makers to kick off its GoogleBook launch this autumn. Who will create Googlebooks for the first time? Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and LenovoThere are potentially more names to come. This is not a final list, but rather confirmed brands set to release some of the first Google Books.

It seems fitting that many of the brands preparing to launch Googlebooks have experience making both Chromebooks and Android tablets. Googlebooks are built on the Android technology stack, and although Google hasn’t confirmed the exact name of the operating system that will power them, it certainly sounds like an Aluminum OS project. Bringing in companies like Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo, which have made Android and ChromeOS hardware in the past, to create Googlebooks could be a good strategy.

However, one name is missing and that is Samsung. Google’s premium laptop offerings to date fall under the Chromebook Plus brand, and Samsung makes a premium Chromebook Plus laptop in the Galaxy Chromebook Plus. Officer Purchase from the Chromebook website List of six partner brands: Acer, ASUS, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and Dell. The only Chromebook partner listed on Google’s site is Samsung, which has not been confirmed to be making a Googlebook.

This omission doesn’t rule out Samsung continuing to make Googlebooks in the future – or a Chromebook Plus model. Google stressed that Googlebooks are not a replacement for Chromebooks and stressed that Chromebooks will remain supported for their 10-year lifespan. However, it stopped short of confirming that new Chromebook models are coming.

Are you excited about the new Googlebooks?

For now, we know that every Chromebook maker except Samsung will usher in the Googlebook era this autumn. Pricing, form factor, and other details are scarce at this time. We’ll have to see what Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo have in store for the first set of Googlebook laptops later this year.
