The 59th match of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), just concluded. Like the reverse fixture, LSG took their revenge against Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. This was the Super Giants’ second win on their home ground this season.
The Super Giants defeated the Men in Yellow by 7 wickets to spoil their playoff qualification position. Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided to bowl first. Super Giants made some changes and brought Mayank Yadav, Akash Singh, Mukul Chaudhary and Abdul Samad into the team. CSK included Spencer Johnson and Gurjapneet Singh in the team.
Karthik Sharma played a fighting innings for CSK.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson made a good start when invited to bat first. But Akash Singh, a former CSK fast bowler, came to trouble his former franchise as he took the first wicket of Gaikwad and then Samson for 13 and 20 runs respectively. Urvil Patel, who was the star the last time these two teams met, was back after scoring 6 runs.
There was a beautiful partnership of 70 runs between Karthik Sharma and Dewald Brevis for the fourth wicket. The former scored 71 runs and Brewis scored 26 runs. After the wickets of these two batsmen, Shivam Dubey and Prashant Veer scored 32 and 13 runs and set the target of 187/5 in the stipulated 20 overs.
Mitch Marsh performed brilliantly against CSK
There was one-way traffic during the chase from Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis as Marsh became manic on the night and was mercilessly attacking Ruturaj Gaikwad’s bowling attack. Both of them completely won the game by making a partnership of 135 runs for the first wicket.
Inglis made 36 and Marsh, who was batting on 90, was out in a most unfortunate manner as Nicholas Pooran played a straight shot and was caught by Mukesh Chaudhary, leaving the Australian captain out of the crease, missing out on a century. Pooran provided the finishing touch to score 32 off 17 and win the game for the Super Giants.
I felt there was something for fast bowlers – Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad and CSK will be under stress after this defeat as their qualification scenario may take a slight hit with two more matches left and the run rate has dropped after this heavy defeat. Ruturaj Gaikwad and his men need big wins in the next two remaining matches against SRH and GT.
After the defeat, Ruturaj Gaikwad said, “I thought there was something for the fast bowlers. You know, when we batted, we found it difficult to hit tough lengths, maybe their bowlers executed it really well. But I think we were thinking of 160 or 170 and we got to 180.”
“So I thought, maybe from a batting point of view we couldn’t have done any better, but I think credit to him. He batted really well and don’t know if the pitch got better or not, but I think he played some exceptional shots. (Talking about bowling the shorter balls) We were watching but you know, Josh Inglis, he played differently in the last game.”
“So we had to come up with a plan and obviously Mitch Marsh is someone who plays the short ball very well. So I think we were just looking to hit that tough length, proper Test match length. We felt there was something, the ball was rotating well, but I thought he hit some very good shots.”
