Whatever you do, do it the best you can.
“May He equip you with everything you need to do His will. May He produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that pleases Him. To Him be glory forever and ever! Amen.” -Hebrews 13:21
Famous marketing guru Seth Godin wrote a book called, Dip. In it he describes the natural peace we experience after starting a project, changing a habit, or starting something new. He examines the difference between “decline” and something that is not worth pursuing. His recommendation is that if you’re not the best at something, quit while you’re still ahead and find something else you can excel at!
This is good advice. Think about it: No one looks for a product or service that is mediocre, no matter what they need. If you are looking for a dentist, chances are you will choose the best dentist, as long as they are affordable. Either people are looking for the best value, or they are looking for the best value. You don’t want to be a company that is mediocre.
On a personal level, I believe God has given each of us at least one thing we are good at. Everyone has a gift. Maybe it’s not something we see as traditional. We are constantly searching for those gifts and talents. Sometimes it takes a long time to develop these talents. But sometimes the best gifts and talents are like bottles of wine – they can take a long time to develop. But when they’re ready, they’re almost flawless.
Whatever you do, do your best. You may not be perfect, but that means you try your best. Best does not mean perfect. Excellence does not mean flawless. It means “of the highest quality or standard, or of the most excellent kind.” (Encarta World English Dictionary.) And excellence is something that God blesses.
