Olivia Rodrigo has finally addressed online criticism over her recent choice to wear a babydoll dress.
For those unaware, the American singer wore a babydoll dress shut it down music video and in her recent Spotify Billion Club live concert.
“It’s bothering me a lot,” Olivia told PopCast. “Not for me either. People can say whatever they want. What’s really disturbing is that I’m wearing clothes that are probably pretentious on stage. I was on stage in a shiny bra and short shorts, which is my right, it’s fun, I felt good and comfortable in it.”
She added, “And while it wasn’t inappropriate, it was inappropriate to completely cover me in an outfit that people would consider childish.”
The 32-year-old singer continued, “It shows how we really normalize pedophilia in our culture. Plus it’s just the rhetoric that’s fed to us as girls since we’re very young, i.e., don’t wear it because then a man will sexualize your body and it’s your fault. It’s so weird.”
She added that “I didn’t think I looked sexy in that at all.” I was like, this is awesome. I think I look like Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love, all these people are my heroes, and I felt good and comfortable in that. “
Olivia continued, “I just think if we start dressing like, ‘I don’t want some king freak to think I’m sexy as a baby’ or any crazy thing like that, then I think it’s losing the narrative a little bit. I’m very protective of young women, girls and I never want them to be given that kind of rhetoric.”
