The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially hired Mats Sundin and John Chayka to lead the club’s hockey operations in a major front office overhaul.
Sundin has returned to the organization in a full-time role as senior executive advisor to hockey operations, with reports stating that he and his family will relocate to Toronto.
Chayka has been named the team’s new general manager and will oversee hockey operations.
“Today is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization,” Keith Pelley, President and CEO of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, said in a statement.
“I am thrilled to welcome John and Mats to their roles, two great hockey minds who will strengthen our entire hockey club.”
The organization said there are no additional changes planned in the front office at this time.
Chayka will reportedly have final authority over hockey decisions and will report directly to Pelé, while Sundin and Chayka are expected to work together in shaping the team’s future.
“I am honored to join the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and look forward to working with Matts and the entire organization,” said Chayka.
Sundin also expressed his excitement about returning to the club where he spent 13 seasons as captain.
According to TSN, Sundin said, “This fan base deserves greatness and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help this team, organization and city achieve it.”
