The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to implement stricter rules aimed at addressing concerns over “girlfriend culture” in Indian cricket. According to a report in Dainik Jagran, the board is planning to implement these disciplinary measures from the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The personal lives of many cricketers are currently making headlines outside the field. Many players including Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan have been seen with their girlfriends. Many of these colleagues have been seen accompanying the players to the hotel in the team bus.

BCCI preparing to implement strict rules against girlfriend culture
The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed that the board is currently discussing the issue internally and will formally address it in the next meeting. The report said that while wives and family members are allowed, the board is planning to take a tough stance on girlfriends staying in team hotels.
“We are discussing it amongst ourselves. It will be discussed in the next BCCI meeting. There is no problem with wives and family members staying in hotels with players, but we have to be a little more serious about girlfriends,” a BCCI official said.
The BCCI had earlier imposed strict rules after the Test series loss in Australia, restricting partners and children to two weeks on foreign tours longer than 45 days. Currently, many domestic players also travel with their girlfriends, some staying in hotels while others make brief visits in the host cities.
BCCI officials surprised by ACU’s directive to allow girlfriends in team hotels
The BCCI official expressed surprise after talking to the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) official about the current arrangement at the hotel. The ACU official revealed that he was instructed to allow wives and “officially declared girlfriends” to live together.
“I spoke to an official from the IPL’s anti-corruption unit about this and he told us that we have been asked to allow wives and ‘officially declared girlfriends’ to live together,” the BCCI official said.
The ACU official responded, “Sir, we are just following those instructions. It is certain that the BCCI will now impose stricter rules regarding whether players can live with their girlfriends or not.”
Earlier, girlfriends were not allowed to stay in team hotels during the IPL, but this has been changed recently. There are also concerns about some influencers promoting betting platforms, while some players have faced police complaints filed by their female teammates.
IPL monitoring challenges raise concerns over discipline and information leaks
The report states that monitoring players during the Indian Premier League is extremely challenging. The Board of Control for Cricket in India strictly manages international tours with strong ACU oversight, but the ten privately run franchises operate with limited central control.
This lack of oversight has affected team discipline, with instances where team buses reportedly waited for players’ girlfriends. The board believes that such a relaxed environment could harm professionalism within the squads.
With the arrival of social media influencers along with players, the risk of leaking of sensitive information is increasing. The report warns that if strict rules are not brought in soon, serious disputes may arise.
