Meta announces ‘completely private’ way to chat with its AI

Meta has found a new way for users to interact with its AI that it calls “completely private.” Accessible from WhatsApp or the Meta AI app, Meta says in the aptly titled Secret to talk with meta AI gives users”space To Ask Question And to explore ideas Without Any Watching.”

one in blog postMeta describes its new secret chats as a way to ensure that the content of your chats are never seen by any other human being, including anyone else on Meta. The post also announced that a new side chat feature is coming to WhatsApp that will let users access Meta AI privately inside chats with other users.

Meta says secret chats are automatically deleted with Meta AI, and are completely private – the post makes the point more than once that Meta and WhatsApp can’t access your chat content. Today’s announcement never explicitly says that the content of your chats will not be used to train AI models, but it does clearly promise that humans will never read your secret chats.

Meta’s announcement references the fact that “incognito-style modes” in other AI apps don’t prevent the platform from accessing your chat content. It appears to be this: Last month, a proposed class action against Perplexity alleged that the service’s Incognito Mode quietly shares chat content with third parties (including Meta, the suit says) for the purpose of ad targeting. If you want to be absolutely sure that your information remains private, your best option is not to enter it into an AI platform at all.
