An Indian-origin truck driver in Canada has been arrested as part of a major investigation into a cross-border smuggling operation involving drugs and contraband worth millions of dollars.The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said “Abhishek Abhishek” was taken into custody after the transport truck he was driving was allegedly allowed to cross into Canada carrying a large quantity of illegal goods. The case involves a Border Services officer who has also been charged.According to authorities, the investigation began when the Canada Border Services Agency shared information with police about a staff member at the Queenston-Lewiston port of entry in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, a crossing between the United States and Canada. Authorities later discovered that a truck and trailer had been allowed to cross the border without following proper procedures.Police said the truck contained millions of dollars worth of opium, cannabis products and tobacco. Following the findings, Abhishek was arrested along with border officer Daniel Notarianni, who was detained earlier this year.Both men now face several serious charges. These include conspiracy to import controlled substances under Canadian law, trafficking, importation of Schedule I drugs and possession for the purpose of trafficking. He has also been charged under the Cannabis Act with multiple counts related to distribution and possession, as well as offenses related to the transportation and sale of tobacco.Authorities said a warrant for Notarian’s arrest was executed on March 6, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation by the RCMP Federal Policing Central Region.Court proceedings have started in the case. Abhishek appeared in the court on March 13, while the notary was to appear on March 18.Officials have not released further details about the alleged operation, but have said the investigation highlights concerns related to border integrity and internal compliance.
