Iran has now threatened to sink US ships and leave the US “paralysed” despite efforts to end the war in the Middle East. Mohsen Rezaei, a high-ranking official in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said an attack would be carried out if Donald Trump targeted the country’s infrastructure.

Rezaei, who is also a member of Iran’s Expediency Discrimination Council, said US ships in the Arabian Gulf would “sink”. He said: “If you attack the infrastructure of the Islamic Republic of Iran, our response will not be an eye for an eye, but a head for an eye; we will paralyze you and drown you in the Gulf.”

He said, “The deadline to save America is approaching”, and “there is not much time left to save the United States from this quagmire”.

Rezaei said Iran would not stop attacking the US until it “receives full compensation for its war damages”, sanctions against it are lifted and Washington promises no further interference.

“This is the decision of the people, the leader and our armed forces.”

Two Iranian news agencies close to the IRGC claimed that there were no direct or indirect talks with Washington. The Fars and Tasnim news agencies instead alleged that Mr Trump had backed down out of fear of the regime’s reaction.

Tasnim said: “Since the beginning of the war, messages have been sent to Tehran by some intermediaries, but Iran’s clear response has been that it will continue its defense until the required level of deterrence is achieved.

“There have been no negotiations and none are ongoing…With this kind of psychological warfare, neither will the Strait of Hormuz return to pre-war conditions nor will peace return to the energy markets.”
