Keira Knightley swapped London’s high streets for the canals of Venice. Yesterday, she was photographed while on holiday with her family in the Italian city, where she wore a perfect outfit for sightseeing. She wore Drake’s 1977 Cotton Twill Baseball Cap ($115) with a basic crewneck T-shirt, black cardigan, baggy wide-leg jeans, and a canvas tote bag.
Her overall outfit is great, but her velvet Mary Jane flats are especially perfect for her Italian excursion. Why? Because Venice is famous for its Venetian slippers. For example, Piedettore Venezia has been producing velvet flats since 1952, including Mary Jane versions that are currently available in over a dozen different colors. “The traditional Venetian sandal was born in 19th century Friuli, where, during a time of post-war necessity, Italian families began to create new shoes with ingenuity and talent by sewing together sumptuous velvet curtains and flattened bicycle tires from closed theaters.” Piedatere Venezia explains on its website. Other Italian brands that have perfected Mary Jane slippers include Vibby Venezia and Viani Milano.
