LBC host James O’Brien and a caller got into a heated debate over how Donald Trump would treat King Charles III during his visit to the United States. During their show today, the pair clashed over the fact that King Charles and Queen Camilla visited Trump this week to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence.
After his arrival in Washington, D.C., O’Brien said: “If you think about Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit and the calculated effort to humiliate a man who is fighting against Vladimir Putin. That’s what I mean, David, there’s no depth to it that he wouldn’t consider that.” He was referring to Zelensky’s extraordinary dressing-down in front of the worldwide media after Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance demanded he show more gratitude for America’s support.
However, the caller, who believes the visit will be very different from a visit with Ukraine’s leader, said: “This is completely different. It is extremely unlikely that he (Trump) will behave toward the king the way he did toward Zelensky.”
The LBC star replied: “So who do you think he has treated respectfully and fairly during his tenure as president?”
The caller said he meant the king was “much more neutral” and was not visiting because he was “the head of the government.”
When O’Brien repeated his question about Trump, he stammered and eventually said: “He’s not a political person, he’s not like other leaders, James. You just can’t compare.”
After asking for the third time, the guest declared his question “irrelevant”.
“You are trying to make up an argument to make your point,” he said angrily. However, the radio host hit back: “I’m not, I’m just asking you a friendly question. He’s met other heads of state, and he’s insulted them. So why would our king be any different?”
As he laughed in disbelief, the caller claimed: “Because the king is a different kind of position than other people. Trump knows the king has been forced to go there and represent the British government.
“There is no reason why he would be aggressive towards the king.”
