US President Donald Trump has called for the White House correspondents’ dinner to be rescheduled within 30 days, with security beefed up after the recent disruption.
Speaking to 60 Minutes, Trump said: “I hope we’re going to do it again. We should do it within 30 days, and they’ll have even more security, and they’ll have greater perimeter security.”
The event was disrupted after a suspected gunman walked through a hotel corridor before being stopped by law enforcement.
Trump praised the officers’ response, saying, “When you see it on tape, it’s almost like a blur.”
“But it was amazing because as soon as they (law enforcement) saw it, you could see them take out their guns. They were very professional, they aimed their guns and then they shot him instantly.”
He said the suspect ran about 45 yards, and commented that “the NFL should sign him up.”
“Some of these guys may be crazy but they’re not stupid and they figure things out,” Trump said.
Officials have not yet confirmed a new date for the event, but discussions are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
