Nobel Prize nominations this year will be for approximately 300 candidates who will be considered for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
As reported reuters, US President Donald Trump is likely to be among the nominees, the secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said on Thursday.
Of the 287 nominations this year, 208 are individuals and 79 are organizations, with a larger number of new nominees than last year.
“One thing that has surprised me somewhat is how much the list is renewed from year to year,” said Harpviken, who has served in the position since January 2025.
He said the award remains relevant despite increasing conflicts around the world and pressure for international cooperation.
“The Peace Prize is even more important in the times we live in,” he said. “It’s worked out just as well, if not better than before.”
Trump likely to be nominated:
The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they have nominated Trump for this year’s award. If they were enrolled, they would have been done in spring and summer 2025, and so they are valid because the deadline was January 31.
Nomination is not an endorsement by the awards body. There is no way to verify this statement, as nominations remain secret for 50 years.
In addition to the committee members, thousands of people around the world can propose names: members of governments and parliaments; Current head of state; University Professor of History, Social Sciences, Law and Philosophy; and former Nobel Peace Prize laureate, among others.
A number of names appear on betting sites betting on this year’s potential award winners, from Yulia Navalnaya, wife of Russia’s late opposition leader Alexei Navalny, to Pope Leo and Sudan’s emergency response room, a volunteer aid group, among others.
Other possible nominations for the Peace Prize:
Potential nominees for this year’s award include Lisa Murkowski, the US senator for Alaska, and Aja Chemnitz, a member of the Danish parliament elected from Greenland, as the Norwegian MP nominated them both.
“Together they have worked tirelessly over many years to build trust and secure the peaceful development of the Arctic region,” said lawmaker Lars Hultbracken.
Greenland has been in particular focus this year due to Trump’s relentless effort to acquire the island from NATO ally Denmark.
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9, while the ceremony will take place on December 10.
Last year’s winner was Maria Corina Machado of Venezuela.
Notably, US President Trump is likely to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but has not yet been confirmed by officials, authorities or the peace committee.
