Major clashes broke out during May Day demonstrations in Istanbul on Friday, when Turkish police fired tear gas and arrested hundreds of protesters attempting to march towards Taksim Square.
According to the CHD Lawyers Association, at least 370 people were detained during the rallies.
AFP reported seeing riot-control vehicles firing tear gas at crowds gathered in the European part of the city.
Protesters attempted to reach Taksim intersection, which was closed off by police overnight.
Union official Basran Aksu was arrested shortly after criticizing the restrictions around Taksim Square.
He said, “You cannot close an intersection to Turkish workers. Everyone uses Taksim for official ceremonies, for celebrations. Only laborers, workers, the poor find this intersection closed to them.”
Protesters also chanted slogans against the Turkish government and US policy as police tightened security across central Istanbul.
The demonstrations came amid growing economic despair in Türkiye, where inflation remains high despite official figures hovering around 30 percent.
