“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, that we may do according to all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29).
There are some things that God has not revealed to mankind. In fact, it appears that only a small portion of what God knows has been revealed to us. We can think of many reasons why God has not spoken about certain things. Some things will be beyond our ability to understand, even if He tells us. We have nothing to do with others, that is to say, we have no need to know them. Other things are more than we can bear – it’s a pity he hasn’t talked to us about them. But whatever the case, “the secret things belong to the Lord our God.”
Yet the main point of Moses’ statement in Deuteronomy 29:29 is about those things to pass was revealed. He said, “These belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the letter and spirit of this law.” God will surely be pleased if we pay more attention to the “doable” and “observable” aspect of His revelation. He has not revealed Himself merely to inform us or to satisfy our curiosity. Rather, it is for the purpose of our obedience. If the problem of sin is limited to our refusal to obey God, then that problem cannot be fixed until we return to full spirit. The goodness of God’s law. Even in the revelation of his character, God not only wants to correct us intellectual misunderstandings of his nature or correct ours emotional Reactions to it. He wants to bring us back to the blessings of a creature Desire One who is obediently conformed to his Creator (as depicted in Psalm 19:7-14).
Blaise Pascal made a good point when he said, “Instead of complaining that God has hidden himself, you should thank him for revealing himself so much.” Given our rebellion against him, it is surprising that God has spoken to us. And if we are thinking right, we will absorb every truth about ourselves that God has shared with us, eagerly seeking not only to know it but to act upon it, always hoping to respond to God with a more perfect blend of awe and gratitude.
“Faith instructs us into the depths of God. Faith is above any human system, no matter how legitimate; it belongs to revealed figures, to that glory which cannot be known by any human name, yet which has wished to make itself known to us in words which all can understand” (Jacques Maritain).
