Spirit Airlines is permanently ceasing all operations as of 3:00am ET today, May 2, 2026. A last-minute government bailout deal with the Trump administration collapsed on Friday when major creditors rejected a plan that would have given the government majority control.
The shutdown resulted in the immediate loss of 17,000 jobs and left 1.8 million travelers scrambling for travel options this month alone.
Rising jet fuel prices, which doubled after the start of the war in Iran, derailed Spirit’s efforts to recover from a second bankruptcy.
Spirit will automatically refund tickets purchased via credit or debit card. Passengers who paid with cash, vouchers or loyalty points will have to seek reimbursement through bankruptcy court, as they are now considered company creditors.
The airline will not reimburse passengers for incidental costs incurred as a result of cancellation.
Jet fuel prices nearly doubled after the war in Iran began, cutting off 20% of the world’s oil supply. As the second largest cost for airlines, fuel increases affected Spirit’s low-cost business model, which relied on bargain-hunting customers sensitive to fare increases.
The company said: “Unfortunately Spirit is not able to reimburse guests for incidental travel costs associated with canceled trips. If you have purchased travel insurance, check with your carrier to see if these expenses may be covered under your plan.”
President Trump initially considered a rescue package or government purchases, but ultimately withdrew support after failing to reach a good agreement and facing opposition from Congress.
This marks the first complete closure of a major US airline since Midway Airlines in 2001. As the 8th largest US carrier, Spirit’s exit is expected to increase industry-wide airfares due to decreased competition.
Spirit has become unprofitable since the COVID-19 pandemic and recently filed for bankruptcy in August 2025.
Although an agreement was reached with creditors to restructure the debt in February 2026, the beginning of the war in Iran three days later made the recovery plan impossible.
