At what point did you start thinking that maybe this could be a real career path for me?
I knew I loved fashion. I really love writing, and I thought working at a magazine would be the best fit for me. That was my dream. I wanted to work in a magazine. Before my last year of college, I got an internship seventeen magazine In the editorial department.
I was the first one in and the last one out. I took a 20 minute lunch and was very happy. I was like, “This is it.” I probably imagined my perfect future there.
One day, a stylist came in and she said, “She’ll come on set with me,” and I didn’t even know what a set was, but I said, “Okay.” I didn’t know where I was going, what was happening, but that was my next day. When we reached the set, she was apparently shooting an editorial for the magazine.
I was watching them decide what they were going to wear, the photographer was taking pictures, and I thought, “This is a job?” Choosing an outfit, dressing up for the moment, is a chore? This is what I have to do. Identification The magazine was my favorite magazine, and Edward Enninful was the fashion director. He got that position when he was 18, and I said, “I’m behind schedule,” like, “I need to get started.”
I graduated early and I moved to California. I had never come here before. I didn’t know anybody here, and I was just like, “I’ve got to start over, I’ve got to get out.” I came here on a Thursday, and with some luck of connections, by the following Thursday, I was assisting a stylist.

At what point did you feel comfortable going out alone?
I was assisting on an Adidas shoot with Kenneth Capello. The stylist had to go back to New York, and Adidas wanted pickup days, and I knew the product well, so they all asked me if I could do it.
The stylist couldn’t come back, and I did that shoot with Kenneth, and I had real success, and he started booking jobs for me himself. We worked with Adidas and Puma and different magazines and celebrities. I had a great time with him.
Then I started working with it nylon The magazine, you know, I wasn’t paid, but they gave me a shipping account, which was the most valuable thing to me, because they gave me complete creative control.
They told me this is the vibe we want, this is the story we’re telling. They would really just let me do editorials. I built my entire Rolodex through those relationships, and then, I would work for their upcoming talents and whatever they were featuring in the magazine.
I have a lot of things to do who wears what And you work with the talent of people, and sometimes we work on talent, sometimes we just work on a creative story, and I was really satisfied.
I was supporting myself, and I felt really good about it.

Summer is upon us. Do you have a specific (sunglass) shape, frame or style that you really like for spring and summer?
I’ve always been a tall rectangular girl – whether it’s a thick frame or a wire frame, vintage, new, whatever, I just love it.
I think it stretches the face, and maybe it’s deeply rooted in the ’90s look, but even when the trends have gone really big and into the ’70s, I still really like a rectangle.

Talk to me about swimming. Do you have a favorite designer? Do you have a favorite silhouette?
I love French-cut bikinis, string, you know, like super sexy, and barely there. But for me, I really need some support. So I think one pieces are super sexy, I really do, especially French cuts like, say, Norma Kamali Forever and Monday Swim.
Talk to me about shoe trends.
I’ve always loved kitten heels. First of all, I think they’re so cute. Secondly, you are confident about the length of time you wear heels.

I think, right now, they’re having a moment for a little bit, so I’m really proud and happy for them, because people are embracing them, but I think it’s the perfect mix of getting your heel on, elevating your look, but also being really comfortable.
