Posting on his Truth social platform, the president said the shooter had been “arrested” and called for the program to be restarted. He also praised the Secret Service for taking “quick and brave” action.
“On one evening, the DC Secret Service and law enforcement did a tremendous job. They acted quickly and bravely,” Trump wrote.
“The shooter has been captured, and I have recommended that we “let the show go on” but will be guided solely by law enforcement. They will make a decision soon.
“Regardless of that decision, the evening will be very different than planned, and we will obviously have to do it again. President Donald J. Trump.”
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the president and first lady and all other Secret Service personnel are safe. They say one person – whose condition is unknown – is in custody.
President Trump has left the venue after the suspicious firing. “The First Lady, the Vice President and all Cabinet members are in perfect condition,” he wrote on Truth Social.
He said the event would be delayed and would be rescheduled within 30 days.
He will give a statement to the media shortly after 10 pm local time.
