MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bat first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, one of the toughest batting tracks in India. However, the way he performed with the bat in his last game might have given Pandya the confidence to bat first.
CSK made some big changes to their team as they opted to select all their youngsters in the same squad. Urvil Patel also played his second match of the season after Ayush Mhatre was ruled out of the upcoming matches.
Anshul Kamboj started with the first big wicket of Will Jacks and once again took three wickets in the game, helping CSK along with Noor Ahmed to restrict them to 159. Kamboj has now taken 17 wickets in 9 matches and is back on top.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Karthik Sharma’s partnership leads CSK to its biggest win over MI
Ruturaj Gaikwad, who came to chase the total score of 160 runs, made a good start with the bat. After Shatvir Samson’s dismissal early in the powerplay against MI in the last game at the Wankhede, Gaikwad contributed to some stunning partnerships.
With a partnership with Urvil Patel that saw him through the power play, he gave CSK the perfect start. Then with young Karthik Sharma, who was promoted to the innings, he made a huge partnership of 98 runs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad contributed an unbeaten 67 runs in just 48 balls and was named the player of the match, while Karthik Sharma also scored his maiden IPL century and played a crucial inning of 54 not out. This was CSK’s biggest win over Mumbai Indians in terms of difference of wickets.

CSK could win only 4 matches last season; However, they have done so with five more matches remaining in the competition. Ruturaj Gaikwad said after the win, “Feels good. We started really well, the first few overs; then they picked up the pace and we pulled it back. It was about getting through the first few overs, and then it was about being there as one of the top three.”
“He (Kamboj) is someone who keeps it really simple, sticks to the process and his mind thinks like a batsman’s mind. Noor has made some adjustments and is working really well.
On the team dynamics, Ruturaj Gaikwad said, “We thought about how to get the balance right, how to bring in batsmen at number eight and extra bowlers. Veer and Ghosh are guys who can contribute with both; they give extra support with the batting and also bowl some overs.”
The CSK skipper was full of praise for young Karthik Sharma: “Yes, he is a six-hitter but he has got another game as well, but he picks special balls. Very good sign for us, as Mr Cricket said, he is someone who, if he grows, can be very good for us.”
