Drizzle could dampen Southern California on Monday and Tuesday before a heat wave arrives just in time for Mother’s Day weekend — with thermometers possibly reaching 90 degrees in Downtown L.A. on Sunday.

Light rain is likely in the eastern San Gabriel Mountains and neighboring foothills and the Central Coast, but totals should remain less than a quarter of an inch, with “many areas seeing little or no rain,” the National Weather Service office in Oxnard said.

Expect cloudy and cool conditions, similar to a “very deep marine-like layer,” the weather service said. “Temperatures will remain well below normal with highs in the upper 60s.”

Temperatures in Downtown LA and Burbank could reach 67 degrees on Monday. That’s down from the May 4 average of 73 for downtown and 75 for Burbank, according to meteorologist Andrew Rourke with the weather service’s Oxnard office.

Elsewhere on Monday, San Clemente could see a high of 64 degrees; Los Angeles International Airport and Escondido, 66; Oceanside, Ontario, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego, 67; Anaheim, 68; Long Beach and Irvine, 69; and Woodland Hills, 70.

Rainfall up to one-tenth of an inch is possible in Orange County, the Inland Empire and San Diego between Monday night and Tuesday afternoon. Other parts of San Diego County may see a little more rain, such as Oceanside, which could see about a third of an inch of rain.

There is a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms across the Sierra Nevada and Central Valley on Monday and Tuesday, and snow across some mountain passes in Mono County. There is also a slight chance of light rain and drizzle in the San Francisco Bay Area, with up to a half-inch of rain possible in the North Bay Monday night into Tuesday morning.

By Wednesday the temperature starts rising, by Friday the heat is in full swing. On Mother’s Day, there is about a 50% chance that temperatures will be 90 degrees in Downtown LA and 100 degrees in the neighboring valleys.

The San Diego Valleys could have been at a high in the 80s; Inland Empire, close to 90; And in the lower desert, more than 100 degrees, the weather service office in San Diego said.

This is enough to pose a moderate risk of heat-related illness to pets, livestock and heat-sensitive people throughout Southern California.

By Saturday, temperatures could reach the 90s in the Central Valley, with temperatures reaching 92 in Bakersfield and Fresno; Sacramento, 91; and Stockton, 90.

On Mother’s Day, the San Francisco Bay shoreline may experience highs in the 70s to mid-80s, with Silicon Valley and inland East Bay valleys reaching lows in the 90s.

Just east of California’s northern coast, light rain and thunderstorms are possible through Tuesday. Throughout the North Coast region, warmer than average temperatures are expected this weekend.

Temperatures in California are expected to remain above average in early May.

    (Climate Prediction Center)

The heat is expected to continue. Temperatures in California are expected to remain above average through mid-May, according to the Climate Prediction Center.

he will follow it Hottest March ever recorded for CaliforniaAs well as nine other states – Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming – according to the National Centers for Environmental Information. It was also the warmest March for the contiguous United States in 132 years of recordkeeping.
