United Airlines has confirmed that an unruly passenger was removed from one of its flights by police after he allegedly attacked a flight attendant and attempted to gain access to the cockpit during a flight to New Jersey.
The incident occurred aboard United Flight 1837, which arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport from the Dominican Republic at approximately 6:25 p.m. Saturday.
According to the Port Authority Police Department, a 48-year-old man was taken into custody and later taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
Another passenger refused medical attention and no other injuries were reported, officials said.
Air traffic control audio captured the pilot requesting emergency assistance after landing.
“A gentleman attacked one of the flight attendants and was trying to open the forward main cabin door,” the pilot said in the recording.
“Oh my God,” the controller replied.
The pilot continued, “Trying to reach the flight deck.”
United Airlines said law enforcement officers assisted the crew in dealing with the passenger and praised the staff for helping “ensure the safety of fellow crew members and our customers.”
The Federal Aviation Administration said it would investigate the incident.
